چکیده

Previous studies of haptic search for object properties have shown efficient perception of various haptic features. In this study, the saliency of hardness and softness was investigated in a search task. In Experiment 1, blindfolded participants had to grasp a bundle of spheres and determine whether a hard target was present among soft spheres or vice versa (Figure 1). When the difference in compliance between target and distractors was small, reaction times increased with the number of items and participants used a serial strategy. With a large difference in compliance, the reaction times did not depend on the number of items and a parallel strategy was used. This was found for both hard and soft spheres. In Experiment 2, participants had to press their hand on a display filled with hard and soft spheres (Figure 2). In the search for a soft target, the slopes of reaction times against the number of items were high, but the locations of target and distractors had a large influence on the search difficulty. With a hard target, the reaction time was independent of the number of items. Overall, these results show that both hardness and softness are salient features. Dynamics of fingertip contact during the onset of tangential slip

Through highly precise perceptual and sensorimotor activities, the human tactile system continuously acquires information about the environment. Mechanical interactions between the skin at the point of contact and a touched surface serve as the source of this tactile information. Using a dedicated custom robotic platform, we imaged skin deformation at the contact area between the finger and a f...

Roughness Encoding in Human and Biomimetic Artificial Touch: Spatiotemporal Frequency Modulation and Structural Anisotropy of Fingerprints

The influence of fingerprints and their curvature in tactile sensing performance is investigated by comparative analysis of different design parameters in a biomimetic artificial fingertip, having straight or curved fingerprints. The strength in the encoding of the principal spatial period of ridged tactile stimuli (gratings) is evaluated by indenting and sliding the surfaces at controlled norm...

Physical Factors Influencing Pleasant Touch during Tactile Exploration

BACKGROUND When scanning surfaces, humans perceive some of their physical attributes. These percepts are frequently accompanied by a sensation of (un)pleasantness. We therefore hypothesized that aspects of the mechanical activity induced by scanning surfaces with fingertips could be objectively associated with a pleasantness sensation. Previously, we developed a unidimensional measure of pleasa...

Toward a Platform of Human-Like Fingertip Model in Haptic Environment for Studying Sliding Tactile Mechanism

Human fingertip and its derivatives in robotics possess an inhomogeneous structure with skin, tissue, bone, and nail; which causes troublesome for construction of a precise model that can represent almost mechanical characteristics, especially during sliding motion. Commonly, models in a virtual haptic environment are frictionless, thus attempts to display tactile sensations are still remained ...

Coordination of three-joint digit movements for rapid finger-thumb grasp.

Human thumb and index finger kinematics were examined for multiple repetitions of a simple grasp task as a means to evaluate motor planning and execution of these important hand movements. Subjects generated a rapid (approximately 90-ms duration) pinch movement of the index finger and thumb from an open-hand position. Approximately 400 repetitions were obtained from four naive subjects. The two...
